About Us

Supporting positive futures

Parent to Parent was developed through a conference held at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee: Early Counselling and Support Services for Parents of Children with Special Needs, when the need for early support was highlighted. Many parents stated they would have liked another parent who had been through a similar experience to visit them at the early stages in hospital to help them overcome their feelings of isolation and fear. The time around diagnosis, whether at birth or later, is usually a particularly stressful time for the family.

The diagnosis of a life limiting condition in a child, whether at birth or later, whether clearly stated or indirectly suggested, often results in parents feeling devastated, guilty, helpless and isolated. How the family is supported during this crisis can have far reaching consequences, both for the child and for the rest of the family. In order to give the child the best possible start in life, it is essential that parents should receive sensitive advice and counselling.

Parent to Parent is currently exploring additional service provisions which are laid out across our 5 year strategic plan.  These initiatives will aim to extend support to children, young people and families, providing direct interventions with children and young people.
