Making a referral for someone else

If you're a professional or someone supporting a family, you can refer them to us using our third party referral form. Please make sure you have the family's permission to refer them to us as we can only accept referrals where consent has been given.
Who we can support
We support parents and carers of children and young people with an additional support need, living throughout Tayside. This includes needs that are suspected as well as those that have been formally diagnosed.
Examples include:
-
An ongoing medical health need
-
A complex health & developmental need
-
Neurodiversity (suspected or diagnosed)
What we ask refers to consider before making this referral
-
Is this family ready for support?
-
Are they likely to actively engage with us as this is not a mandatory support service?
-
Will they attend our online decider workshop?
-
What other organisations are currently involved. Would this be the right time for our service?
Before you start
To help your referral go smoothly, it can be useful to have a few details to hand, such as:
-
the child or young person's name and date of birth
-
a brief description of their additional support need
-
the family's contact details
Prefer to talk to someone first? You don't have to fill in a form on your own if you'd rather not. If you have any questions, need help completing a referral, or would prefer to talk things through before you begin, please contact us on 01382 817558 or email admin@parenttoparent.uk and a member of our team will be happy to help.
What happens after you refer
We aim to review every referral as quickly as we can. Once we have received your referral, we'll get back in touch to let you know whether it's been accepted. Please keep an eye on your emails, including your junk or spam folder, as this is how we'll share any next steps with you.
Here's what you can expect:
-
We receive your referral through the relevant online form.
-
We will contact the family— we will need further information directly from the family
-
We review it against our criteria.
-
We will let you know the outcome - we will let the family and yourself know the outcome.
-
We get in touch about next steps.
Reasons we may not be able to accept a referral
We want to make sure that Parent to Parent is the right service and there may be some circumstances where we are unable to accept a referral, e.g.
-
Live outside Tayside – our family support service currently supports families living in Dundee, Angus and Perth & Kinross.
-
The child or young person does not have an additional support need – this does not need to be formally diagnosed, and we can support families where a need is suspected or currently being explored.
-
The young person has left secondary education – our service supports parents and carers while their child or young person is of school age or remains in secondary-level education. This means that in some circumstances we may continue to support a family beyond age 16 where the young person remains in secondary education, up to a maximum age of 18.
-
The support you are looking for falls outside the remit of Parent to Parent – our service focuses on supporting parents and carers. There may be times when another organisation or service is better placed to provide a particular support.
-
You are looking for emergency or crisis support – Parent to Parent is not an emergency or crisis service.
-
It may not be the right time for the family – Parent to parent recognise the need for multi team responses however, from experience, if too many agencies are involved at the same time families can become overwhelmed. We may suggest our involvement comes at a later stage.
-
Consent has not been provided for a third-party referral – if you are referring a family on their behalf, we must have their permission before we can accept the referral.
**Please note as we are not a statutory service we have limited access to additional supports e.g. Interpreters/ BSL so we may not always be able to meet all families needs.
Your privacy: We take the privacy of the families we support seriously. Any information you share with us as part of a referral is treated confidentially and handled in line with our privacy policy.
