Making a Self Referral

At Parent to Parent, we adopt a whole family support approach, and our initial focus is supporting you as the parent or carer. We are here to offer support, guidance and practical advice around the challenges your child or young person may be experiencing. We believe that you know your child better than anyone else. By listening to your experiences and supporting you with the worries, challenges or concerns you are facing, we can help you feel more confident and better equipped to support your child and your wider family. Reaching out for support can feel like a big step. we want to make it as straightforward as possible, and this page explains how.
Who we can support
We support parents and carers of children and young people with an additional support need living throughout Tayside. This includes needs that are suspected as well as those that have been formally diagnosed.
Examples include:
-
An ongoing medical health need
-
a complex health & developmental need
-
neurodiversity (suspected or diagnosed)
Before you start
To help your referral go smoothly, it can be useful to have a few details to hand, such as:
-
the child or young person's name and date of birth
-
a brief description of their additional support need
-
your contact details
Prefer to talk to someone first? You don't have to fill in a form on your own if you'd rather not. If you have any questions, need help completing a referral, or would prefer to talk things through before you begin, please contact us on 01382 817558 or email admin@parenttoparent.uk and a member of our team will be happy to help.
What happens after you refer
We aim to review every referral as quickly as we can. Once we have received your referral, we'll get back in touch to let you know whether it's been accepted. Please keep an eye on your emails, including your junk or spam folder, as this is how we'll share any next steps with you.
Here's what you can expect:
-
We receive your referral through the relevant online form.
-
We review it against our criteria.
-
We let you know the outcome — whether the referral has been accepted or not.
-
We get in touch about next steps. Reasons we may not be able to accept your referral
We want to make sure that Parent to Parent is the right service for you and your family. There may be some circumstances where we are unable to accept a referral, including where:
-
You live outside Tayside – our family support service currently supports families living in Dundee, Angus and Perth & Kinross.
-
Your child or young person does not have an additional support need – this does not need to be formally diagnosed, and we can support families where a need is suspected or currently being explored.
-
Your young person has left secondary education – our service supports parents and carers while their child or young person is of school age or remains in secondary-level education. This means that, in some circumstances, we may continue to support a family beyond age 16, up to a maximum age of 18.
-
The support you are looking for falls outside the role of Parent to Parent – our service focuses on supporting parents and carers. There may be times when another organisation or services are better placed to provide a particular support you or your child needs.
-
You are looking for emergency or crisis support – Parent to Parent is not an emergency or crisis service. If there is an immediate risk to you, your child or another person, you should contact the appropriate emergency or crisis services.
If we are unable to accept your referral, this does not necessarily mean that you do not need support. Wherever possible, we will explain why we are unable to accept the referral and try to signpost you to another service or source of support that may be more appropriate.
Your privacy: We take the privacy of the families we support seriously. Any information you share with us as part of a referral is treated confidentially and handled in line with our privacy policy.
